It is very popular due to its large number of baobabs that surround and cover the park when you gets into sight as you reach near.  The landscape is also remarkable as the Tarangire river flows across the park to nourish both fauna and flora, giving them life during dry season.

Located 118 km west of Arusha, around 2 hours drive, Tarangire park was established in 1970 with an area of 2850 sq km, with the aimed of protecting it from hunters and poachers who had been invading this area. It is said, poachers hid themselves in the hollowed baobab trunks then shot animals that came closer. Many elephants were killed. After establishment, the nature was restored and now this park has the highest number of elephants after Mikumi national park.

Hollowed baobab

The name Tarangire came from a local tribe called Mbugwe that inhabited this area. Tarangire is a two word combination: Tara means river and Ngire means warthog. Hence, meaning a river of warthog. This came about when this local tribe often met warthogs along the river when the went to fetch water. This Tarangire fresh water river crosses the park, thus serves as a primary source of water during dry season for both animals and plants. During this period, a large concentration of animals roam around the river searching for water and green pasture for herbivorous. A spectacular view can be seen as predators prey the herbivorous.

This park is famous for it’s abundant groups of enormous elephants and baobabs everywhere.

The best time to see large number of wildlife is from June to October. Animals such as antelopes, giraffes and sometimes leopards can be seen throughout the year.
