Tanzania is one of the countries located in Eastern Africa along the Indian Ocean. It is a United Republic because Tanganyika (The mainland) united with Zanzibar in 1964 to form one country Tanzania. Zanzibar is an Island in the Indian Ocean about 73.43 Km from Tanzania mainland. Tanganyika got its independence in 1961 and Zanzibar in 1963. On 26th April, 1964 Tanganyika and Zanzibar united. Tanzania borders Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Mozambique, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi and the Indian Ocean. Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the father of Tanzania, helped Tanganyika gain its independence and ruled the nation till 1985. He was succeeded in office by President Ali Hassan Mwinyi who ruled till 1995. Then, Hon. Ali Mwinyi was succeeded in office by President Benjamin William Mkapa who had his 10 years in the government and handed over to Hon. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete in 2005. He then governed for 10 years and handed over to Hon. John Pombe Magufuli in 2015. His Excellence Dkt. Magufuli is now the president of Tanzania. Election is done every 5 years and the elected president rules for not more than 10 years if he/she is reelected for the second term Tanzania is a democratic country. Its constitution welcomed multiparty system in 1992 and in 1995 it had it first multiparty election. There have been several political parties since then, but the following is the current list.
